100711 Sonoma Coast State Beach & Gualala
July 11, 2010 - Whoever had the idea of driving up Highway 1 (wait- that was me!) had a great idea! :-) There is so much beauty here, around every bend. And right now the wildflowers are peaking, which adds so much color. I'd forgotten why I love the iceplant - they are so colorful! I love the contrast of the green and purple - or the green and red, etc.
I lucked into a treasure of a campground this afternoon. I stopped earlier than usual, since it was Saturday I was afraid I wouldn't find a campsite if I waited too late. So I stopped in this little town I'd never heard of - Gualala (pronounced wah-lah-lah), thinking maybe no one else had ever heard of it either! Wrong! [photo on left of the oceanside town of Gualala] The Gualala River is popular for rafting and kayaking. But I am parked in the middle of a redwood forest, right on the banks of the Gualala River!! Wow! I am with the Native Americans on the idea of land ownership. How can someone "own" a redwood tree? Or a whole forest of them? But I am grateful to be camping here. And the sun came out for awhile this afternoon - I'm grateful for that too. My walk through the regional park was lovely and unique; I walked down to the beach and back. Delightful! [This little guy was singing his heart out for me, so I just had to take his picture! - photo above]
There isn't any way to take a picture of a redwood tree that puts it in perspective. They are so tall that I can't even get the whole tree in the picture. And the biggest ones are so big around that you just can't fathom it. There are a number of big old stumps around the campground that have been turned into play "equipment" for the kids. That gives you somewhat of an idea. [photo above] This forest also has something unique they call "Cathedral Tree" - 15 redwoods in a circle. There used to be one in the center as well; the stump is still there. Amazing!
