100712 Russian Gulch State Park & Point Cabrillo Lighthouse

July 12, 2010 – Fort Bragg, CA – I explored Caspar Cove near here and watched a Canadian goose and her two goslings for awhile.

Then I walked the Fern Canyon trail at Russian Gulch State Park. (This is not THE Fern Canyon, but another by the same name. I expect to be at THE Fern Canyon within the next couple days.) That was a very nice walk through the forest, with lots of ferns and horsetail. The highlight of that walk was that I saw two sets of quail chicks. I’d never seen any quail chicks before. They were so tiny!! At one point the mama gathered all her babies under her wings and covered them. I'd heard that they do that sometimes. There are references to that image in hymns, for sure. After a couple minutes, when she no longer felt threatened, she released them to go back to their search for bugs. What a treat!

Then finally I walked to the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse. It’s not a tall one, but it’s a nice one. And they still use the old Fresnel lens. When I got too close to it I couldn’t see the light, but further away, up the hill, when I was level with the light, I could see it better. Made it real clear that the light goes out on a horizontal plane.

But that was too much walking in one day. My feet were not happy.
