Six Weeks in New England Apr/May 2010 - Part I

FEMA called me to Massachusetts to work the floods there in April. I had Sundays off, and only worked 9 1/2 hour days (it's not unusual for me to work 7 days a week, 12 hours a day at a disaster, so this was nice). That means I had some time to explore the area on my days off, and, even, sometimes, in the evenings. And I made the most of it.

When I first got there, the trees were all flowering. It started with a beautiful weeping cherry tree flowering in front of my hotel in Tewksbury [above], near Andover. I'd never seen one before, and I loved its lines and delicate pink color, each and every time I drove by it on my way home or out. There was color everywhere, and I loved driving around and down the narrow, winding roads, and looking at the beautifully-landscaped, New England homes. The golden forsythia was gorgeous. The beautiful red magnolias were abundant. The land is well-forested, so I always felt like I was driving through the countryside, or at least through a small country town. I liked that feeling, but not the feeling that I couldn't see very far ahead, nor very far to either side. Kind of "closed in".

I was fascinated with the many stately graceful public buildings and church steeples.

Beautiful pictures and narrative. This gives me an idea of places to visit on our way back from NE Canada.
