100605 Antelope Canyon & Lake Powell

5 Jun 2010, Sat - Page, AZ

You'd never know this was the #1 attraction in Page, AZ, would you? This is the Antelope Slot Canyon - from the top. [left]

This is the entrance to the Antelope Slot Canyon(Lower Canyon)[right]. I'm not kidding. I could barely squeeze through the slot to get down in to the canyon.

My tripod allowed me to get a photographer's pass, which allowed me to be inside for four hours instead of one (same price - good deal!).

I’ve seen photos of Antelope Canyon for most of my life – those incredible photos of light shafts in a swirled orange/red/purple/blue slot canyon. I didn’t realize until I got here last night, that Antelope Canyon is here in Page, and I got really excited when I realized that I was going to be able to see it while I’m here.

I didn't get any photos of the quality I was hoping to get, but I got better as I went along. And I get another chance. I'm taking a tour of the Upper Canyon - with a professional Navajo guide - who is also an expert photographer - on Monday.

I had a leisurely lunch at the marina on Lake Powell, then spent the rest of the day wandering around the lake, admiring its beauty, and trying to catch it.

It was a hot day here today - 99 - but not as hot as Phoenix. I heard they hit 110. Makes 99 look pretty good. :-)

Amazing! I had no idea that the Anasazi culture was wiped out by a volcano.

Kathryn, I think you must have been a nomad in a previous life.:)

Grace - Sorry I left the wrong impression. It's just in that one spot - where the Sunset Crater is - that the volcano eruption probably destroyed the community there.
